“Gardening is cheaper than therapy and you get tomatoes.” -Unattributed

Start a garden. Any kind, any size will do. If you live in the country, then no problem, and if you live in a city, then get a box for the window. Gardens are adjustable to their environments.

Gardens offer a chance to create something and enjoy the rewards. The fruits, or the vegetables, of your labor will taste satisfying. The time digging and getting dirty is a calming, therapeutic way to relax. You’ll save at the grocery store, and you’ll have better produce. A garden tomato is like no other.

In 1785, Thomas Jefferson wrote, “Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independent, the most virtuous, & they are tied to their country & wedded to its liberty & interests by the most lasting bonds.” Those feelings stayed with Jefferson. 26 years later, he wrote, “No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden.” Hear, hear.
