Conservative- Conservative really just means reserved in most contexts.
This word has changed some over time. In the 1750s, Samuel Johnson defined it as, “Having power of opposing diminution or injury.” Webster’s Dictionary of 1913 pretty much has that same definition listed as number one, but then adds as its second meaning, “Tending or disposed to maintain existing institutions; opposed to change or innovation.” Today, Google lists as the first definition, “Adverse to change or innovation and holding traditional values.” Google’s definition is inaccurate and clearly meant to be an insult.
In political contexts, conservative means support for individual liberty, free markets, and limited government. Republicans are typically conservative.
Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky is the most principled conservative in the US House. We’re lucky to have him.
