Psephology– The study of elections and voting trends.

The word was first coined by R. B. McCallum. He explains the etymology in his 1954 paper called “The Study of Psephology,” “More as a joke than anything else, I devised a Greek name, psephology, from the Greek word psephos, a pebble, which was the mode in which the ancient Athenians cast their vote.”

The field has grown, along with political science, a tremendous amount since 1954. Political pundits on various media outlets pick up the lingo, but few, if any, are actual psephologists.
