The Special Election to fill the state senate seat left vacant from Republican Jen Kiggans’s promotion to Congress is set for January 10.

The new state senate district is now called the 7th. Below is a map of the new lines from VPAP.org.

Nominations from the two major parties have already been quickly decided. Republicans nominated Kevin Adams, a retired Lt. Commander of the US Navy. From his website

“It should be easy to start a small business in our commonwealth, and those who work hard should keep more of that hard-earned money. Red tape and bloated government budgets often get in the way of innovation, job growth and prosperity.

I started a business to teach my children life skills and have something to pass down to the next generation. Every Virginian should have the opportunity to do the same. To get our economy moving and lower the high cost of inflation for families across the commonwealth, I will support and promote commonsense tax and regulatory reform, including lowering the gas tax and Governor Youngkin’s promise to end our regressive grocery tax.”

Democrats nominated Aaron Rouse, who played football at Virginia Tech and then in the NFL for three seasons. His website does not mention his policy positions.

The open seat puts Virginia’s Senate at 21 Democrats and 18 Republicans, with Republicans having the tie-breaking vote in the chamber from Lt. Governor Winsome Sears. A razor-thin Democrat majority can be tough to hold and the GOP can’t afford to lose any more ground, so expect both parties to run hard for this seat.
