“Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you. Amen.”-St. Thomas Aquinas
Today is National Day of Prayer.
The tradition is as old as America. American G.I. Museum writes,
“The modern law formalizing its annual observance was enacted in 1952, although the Second Continental Congress practiced days of fasting and prayer from 1775 until 1783 and President John Adams held similar days in 1798 and 1799. Thomas Jefferson established a day of prayer and thanksgiving, but this only occurred while he was governor of Virginia.”
